Faculty members are actively engaged in understanding pressing environmental issues from local to global. This includes:
- 1) Improving the training and practice of environmental impact assessment (EIA) – the process of identifying, predicting, and evaluating the potential environmental effects of a proposed project – to guide thinking ahead of time to improve the environmental design and avoid future harms;
- 2) Taking a systems approach to investigate how to implement more fundamental shifts towards sustainable and equitable practices in engineering practices; and
- 3) Developing new approaches and perspectives to evaluate the technological needs of transformational pathways that address global environmental issues, such as climate change;
- 4) Quantitatively assess the impacts of climate changes on infrastructure, ecosystems, and human societies;
- 5) Develop and assess systems, approaches and policies that contribute to resilience and sustainable development.
